Captain of Speedboat Crash that Killed 5-Year-Old Russian Girl in Phuket Tests Positive for Amphetamine

Drug testing on the captain of the speedboat that crashed into a rock near Mai Ton Island on December 31 yielded a positive result.

The incident occurred in the second half of the day on December 31 when the speedboat, carrying tourists, was returning from an excursion from the Phi Phi Islands to Phuket.

As a result of the collision with the rock, a 5-year-old girl from Russia died. Eight people sustained injuries of varying severity.

According to the initial drug test result, traces of methamphetamine were found in the captain's blood. Whether he was under the influence of narcotics while performing his duties is not yet definitively known.

Doctors will conduct additional examinations in the near future.

As a safety measure following the incident, on January 1, the Phuket authorities conducted selective drug testing on 23 captains and sailors at the Chalong Pier. No traces of drugs were found in anyone.

The Chalong Police have not pressed charges against the speedboat captain. The man is in a coma, and he will undergo surgery in the near future.
