Taxi drivers in Phuket held a protest and once again filed complaints against drivers from online ride-hailing services.

Yesterday, during the daytime, over 100 drivers of tuk-tuks, taxis, and other public transport organized an impromptu rally in front of the Phuket administration building.

They called on authorities to protect them from unfair competition, both legal and illegal drivers working through mobile apps like Grab, Bolt, and others.

The drivers told local media about the loss of income as tourists and local residents opt for the cheaper rates available with online ride-hailing services.

Even though drivers of these services can also accept orders through online platforms, they find the fares offered by these services unprofitable.

The authorities responded to the protest by meeting with the representatives of the protesting drivers.

The main complaint from the drivers was that unscrupulous competitors are using private vehicles as taxis, thus violating the Land Transport Act.

Specific cases were also mentioned where individuals were found with counterfeit Car App stickers, which the Department of Land Transport (PLTO) issues to drivers who have permission to work through mobile applications.

During the meeting, the authorities pledged to address issues related to taxis and to punish all lawbreakers.
