Tourists from Finland were detained for overstaying after one of their parents reported extortion demands from the police.

On December 15, 2023, the tourist police in Phuket received a report about the disappearance of a Finnish tourist. According to his parents, the 27-year-old man informed them that he urgently needed money as a police officer was demanding 7,000 euros from him.

The next day, the police found the missing tourist and his 34-year-old friend in one of the entertainment venues in Patong. During document verification, it was revealed that both men had overstayed in the country for 141 days.

Later, the tourists confessed to fabricating the money extortion story as they wanted to stay longer in Thailand.

Charges were filed against the tourists for violating the terms of stay in the country. Additionally, they may face charges for knowingly making a false statement about money extortion from the police.

After the investigation, the men will be deported from the country and blacklisted for entry into Thailand.
